After extensive testing of the latest map files, I can confirm that Dota 6.68 is a significant shift in the competitive meta. Icefrog has introduced substantial balance changes that fundamentally alter how gold is managed and how team fights are initiated. Below is a breakdown of the key updates based on my hands-on experience with the new mechanics.

New Hero Analysis

  • Guardian Wisp, Lo: A ranged strength hero. In practice, Lo functions as a powerful support/carry hybrid. Its utility lies in its protective capabilities and mobility, making it highly effective for repositioning allies during skirmishes.
  • Far Seer, Thrall: A ranged intelligence hero. With three distinct area-of-effect (AOE) spells and a relocation ability, Thrall is a premier ganker. Mastering the timing of his relocation skill is essential for isolating targets.
  • Shadow Demon, Eredar: A ranged intelligence hero. Eredar brings back the classic Purge skill. Combined with his banishing ability and two damage-dealing spells, he is a high-impact ganker that requires precise mana management.
  • Gyrocopter, Aurel Vlaicu: A ranged agility hero. Aurel is designed for long-range engagement. All four of his abilities deal damage, and his stun provides the necessary crowd control to facilitate ganks from a distance.

Items and Mechanics

The introduction of Arcane Boots simplifies the support item build path by merging Boots of Speed and the Arcane Ring recipe. Additionally, the Orb of Venom provides a reliable poison effect, which is a useful early-game pickup for heroes looking to secure kills through sustained harassment. Perhaps the most critical change is the new gold mechanic. Gold is now split into Reliable Gold (earned via hero kills) and Unreliable Gold (earned via creep and tower kills). When a hero dies or purchases items, the game logic prioritizes the Unreliable Gold pool. This change is clearly intended to incentivize aggressive play and ganking, as players can no longer hoard gold safely through passive farming alone.
