Understanding the DotA 6.68 Gold Mechanic
With the release of DotA 6.68, the game introduced a significant shift in how economy management works. Having played through various iterations of the map, I’ve found this change to be a critical adjustment for late-game consistency. By splitting your total gold into two distinct pools—'Reliable Gold' and 'Unreliable Gold'—the game now offers a layer of protection for players who secure kills, mitigating the economic penalty of dying.

Official Mechanics Breakdown
Icefrog provided clear technical documentation on how these pools function. Understanding this distinction is essential for high-level play, as it changes how you prioritize your farming and engagement strategies.
"Reliable Gold" - This pool is reserved for high-impact income. Any bounty earned from hero kills or the extra "aoe kill gold" bonus (a feature introduced in previous patches) is added directly to your Reliable Gold pool.
"Unreliable Gold" - This represents your standard passive income, including gold from creep kills and neutral camps.
Strategic Implications
The core benefit of this system is death mitigation: Dying can only take away gold from your Unreliable Gold pool and not from your Reliable Gold. Furthermore, the game logic is designed to prioritize your spending; buying items uses up your Unreliable Gold first before touching your Reliable Gold.
Practical Example:
If you have 910 total gold (500 Unreliable, 410 Reliable):
- Buying Boots of Speed (500 gold): Your Unreliable Gold is consumed first. You are left with 0 Unreliable and 410 Reliable gold.
- Buying Chainmail (550 gold): The game consumes your 500 Unreliable gold, then pulls 50 from your Reliable pool, leaving you with 360 Reliable Gold.
The system is designed to be seamless. You do not need to perform manual transfers; your total gold remains visible in the standard UI, while your specific Reliable Gold total is displayed in the scoreboard title for quick reference during a match.
As this is an experimental feature, it remains subject to balance adjustments based on community feedback and observed results in competitive play. Always monitor official patch notes for further refinements to this economy system.
