If you have recently migrated your Warcraft III installation by copying the game folder to a new PC rather than performing a fresh installation, you may encounter a common registry conflict. When attempting to update the game, the patcher often fails because it cannot locate the necessary file paths in the Windows Registry.
I have personally encountered this "Registry error loading key 'Warcraft III\InstallPath'" multiple times when moving my game library between drives. It occurs because the patcher relies on specific registry entries to verify the installation directory, which are not created when you simply copy-paste the game files.
To resolve this, you must manually define the installation path in the Windows Registry. Follow these steps to restore the patcher's functionality:
Manual Registry Fix for Windows
- Press Windows Key + R on your keyboard, type
regedit, and click OK to open the Registry Editor. - Use the search function (press F3) and search for
Warcraft III. You should navigate to:Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III. - Right-click on the
Warcraft IIIfolder in the left-hand menu, select New, and then select String Value. - Rename this new entry exactly to
InstallPath. - Double-click the new
InstallPathentry and enter the full file path where your Warcraft III folder is located (e.g.,E:\Warcraft III). - Once the path is saved, close the Registry Editor and re-run the patcher.
Note: Always exercise caution when editing the Windows Registry. Ensure you have the correct path typed into the String Value, as an incorrect directory will prevent the patcher from identifying your game files.
