Learn how to install WarDota 2, a custom Warcraft III transformation. Get technical setup tips, map requirements, and troubleshooting.
WarDota 2 is a comprehensive mod for
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne designed to bring the aesthetic and atmospheric elements of Dota 2 into the classic Warcraft III engine. Having extensively tested this transformation, I have found it provides a unique way to revisit the roots of the MOBA genre with a modern visual overhaul.
What is included in the Package?
This modification package replaces core game assets to mimic the Dota 2 experience:
- Customized Terrain: Textures and environmental assets modeled after Dota 2.
- HUD and GUI: A complete interface overhaul.
- Ripped Models and Audio: Direct ports of Dota 2 hero models, sound effects, and voice responses.
- Custom Dota Maps: Includes the WarDota2 Map (Dota 6.74 AI by Rena!ssance) and a custom map by Kazekage 966.

Technical Updates and Features
This version introduces several key assets that require the specific custom map to function correctly:
- Added Pugna, Phantom Lancer, and a variety of heroes including Shadow Fiend, Slardar, TideHunter, Chen, Lion, Balanar, Weaver, and Bloodseeker.
- Integrated Dire Towers, Radiant/Dire custom missiles, Bad_Ancient, and Roshan.
- Credits to Trolboy for the Shopkeeper (Screetshop) model.
Troubleshooting and Configuration
Based on common technical hurdles, here is how to resolve missing asset issues:
- Invisible Assets: If towers or heroes appear invisible, ensure you are using the "WarDota2 Full" patch. Partial installations (Terrain/UI only) will cause model path conflicts.
- Locating Model Paths: If you need to manually verify paths for custom units:
- Open the custom map using an MPQ editor like winMpq or MpqMaster.
- Extract the
Units\UnitUI.slk file.
- The tower paths are listed at the bottom of the file, which can be merged into your existing
UnitsUI.slk.
